“Dusting” is a dangerous trend that involves teens inhaling compressed air dusters or keyboard cleaners to get high—a form of inhalant abuse that’s growing among adolescents. Because these products are cheap, easy to buy, and legal, many teens mistakenly believe they’re safe. But the chemicals in dusting sprays can cause serious health risks, including brain damage, heart failure, and even death.

In this blog post, we’ll explain what dusting is, why it appeals to teens, the warning signs to watch for, and how parents can start an informed conversation with their children today.

What is Dusting?

  • Dusting is a type of inhalant abuse where users spray an aerosol product into their mouth or nose via a straw, creating an intense high
  • Users often inhale keyboard cleaners or dust removers that contain dangerous chemicals such as difluoroethane and tetrafluoroethane
  • These chemicals are not safe for human consumption and can cause side effects such as hallucinations, dizziness, and loss of coordination. Long-term damage can be much worse
  • This type of abuse is commonly referred to as “huffing”

Why do teens want to “dust"?

  • The products that teens use to “dust” are easy to access and affordable
  • Many assume that these products  are safe compared to illegal drugs
  • Many teens are seeing this viral trend on TikTok or other social media platforms

Top concerns of “dusting”

  • Immediate side effects of dusting can include hallucinations, dizziness, nausea, headaches, and impaired motor control
  • Long term consequences of “dusting” include brain damage, heart failure, liver and kidney damage, muscle weakness, mood swings, depression, and memory loss (Source:  addictioncenter.com)
  • Because teenagers’ brains are still developing, “dusting” is even more dangerous

What can parents do?

  • Discuss this viral trend with your teens, making sure they understand how dangerous inhalant abuse is
  • Talk with them about peer pressure and the long term impact of participating in viral social media trends that involve dangerous behavior
  • If you are concerned your child is suffering from side effects of “dusting,” take them to the doctor or call 911

News about “dusting”

What is dusting? Experts warn of deadly trend that killed an Arizona Teen
…this behavior is often seen in young people because the substances are “readily accessible” for teenagers looking to experiment. He added that teens are more likely to engage in risk-taking behavior and may be unaware of the potential dangers. - NBC Chicago

Conclusion

The consequences of “dusting” can be immediate and life-threatening for teenagers.  Parents should talk openly with their teens about the dangers of inhalant abuse, reinforcing that just because something is legal or easy to get doesn’t make it safe. Most importantly, remind them they should always talk to a trusted adult if they’re feeling pressured, curious, or struggling.
