If your child has a NeeDoh “Nice Cube” on their desk or in their backpack, there’s a good chance they have also seen the TikTok videos pushing the “NeeDoh hack.” The trend encourages kids to microwave the toy for 15 to 30 seconds to make it extra soft and squishy, but the risk is serious. NeeDoh cubes are sealed and filled with a thick gel that can expand quickly when heated, which can cause the toy to rupture and spray extremely hot, sticky gel that clings to skin and keeps burning. In this post, we’ll break down what the NeeDoh hack is, why it’s dangerous, and exactly what parents can say and do to help kids avoid getting hurt.

Parent Video

What is the NeeDoh Hack?

  • NeeDoh is a sensory toy that many kids (and some adults) use to help with stress and to relax
  • There is a TikTok trend encouraging people to put their NeeDoh toys in the microwave to heat them up (Source: CBS News)
  • The "NeeDoh Hack" suggests that 15 to 30 seconds in the microwave will turn a standard "Nice Cube" into a super-pliable stress reliever

Top Concerns of the NeeDoh Hack

  • NeeDoh toys are hermetically sealed and filled with a thick, PVA-based gel that expands rapidly when heated. The outer skin of the toy ruptures, spraying molten gel at temperatures often exceeding 200°F
  • Because the filling is sticky, it doesn’t just splash, it clings to skin and hair, continuing to burn until it is scrubbed off
  • Several kids have experienced second degree burns as a result to trying the viral TikTok NeeDoh hack

What can parents do?

  • Parents can talk to their kids about the NeeDoh hack and the dangers it poses
  • Remind kids that if a toy doesn't say "Microwave Safe," it is never a good idea to put in the microwave
  • If you own a NeeDoh, inspect the toy looking for any thinning spots or leaks in the outer membrane
  • Parents can also discuss social media challenges in general and how kids should really talk them over with an adult before they attempt them themselves

Dialogue Starters

  • "I saw a video about heating up sensory toys like your NeeDoh. I’m worried it might be one of those 'fake' hacks that is actually dangerous. Have you seen anyone talking about that at school or online?"
  • "Did you know that the gel inside those cubes is designed to stay cold? If it gets hot, it builds up pressure like a tiny bomb. I love that you like the squishy texture, but if we heat it, that gel can stick to your skin and cause a really bad burn. Let’s keep it at room temperature so it stays safe."
  • "Sometimes people post videos of 'challenges' just to get views, even if they know the result is dangerous or fake. If you ever see a 'hack' that involves the microwave, fire, or chemicals, can we look it up together first to see if it’s actually safe?"

In the News

Conclusion

The NeeDoh hack is a good reminder that “viral” doesn’t mean “safe.” A few seconds in the microwave can turn a harmless stress toy into a real burn risk, and kids often do not realize how quickly things can go wrong. The best protection is a simple plan: talk about it early, set a clear rule that toys never go in the microwave unless an adult says it’s safe, and encourage your child to bring you any “hack” or challenge they see online before they try it.
